Image : http://www.flickr.com

As with all great traditions, there are few differences at experiential levels; however, at a belief level, after we label and try to explain the experiences, some differences exist – such as beliefs about heaven and God. Heaven is achievable, but always only a temporary respite for a Buddhist, and there is no belief in a personal God; a difference between belief and actual knowing is recognized. We can believe in Santa Claus, but when we see him in our living room putting gifts under the tree, then our belief becomes a reality, unless, of course, its dad all dressed up!

So what do Buddhists believe? They believe that we must follow the precepts, or guidelines, which number five, eight and ten for lay people, and two hundred twenty-seven for monks. The five precepts list not killing, stealing, indulging in inappropriate sex (with those spoken for or too young to understand), lying, or indulging in intoxicants. These are to be adhered to at all times.

The eight precepts are kept temporarily when a lay person attends a retreat or visits a monastery. They are the five precepts plus 6. no eating solid food after noon, 7. no dancing, singing, music, entertainment, jewelry, perfumes or cosmetics, and 8. no sleeping on high or large luxurious beds.

The ten precepts apply to people actually living in a monastery and add no touching of money, gold or silver to the list, and separates the seventh precept into two. making ten. Buddhists believe that if these precepts are kept, the next lifetime will be in a happy realm of humans or devas (minor Gods). However, because of past karma from many other lifetimes that has not been fully resolved, there is the possibility that after some time in this happy realm, a temporary fall back into the hell, animal or ghost realms could occur. Therefore, only being a good person won’t insure a happy destiny forever – that takes additional work.

Heaven to a Buddhist, unfortunately, is not a one-way ticket! If only it were that easy. A Buddhist must go a little deeper than being good, kind, loving, and following the rules. The morality has to become natural where all actions are moral without thinking about how morality will help them get to heaven. This requires what is called a spiritual training of the mind, or meditation, which if perfected, removes all our bad karma so that we will not have to worry about falling back into the lower realms.

Spiritual training begins with meditation; concentrating the mind or practicing awareness. In Christianity, this is called orison or introversion, which is further broken down into recollection, quiet and contemplation (meditation). These stages of Christian practice parallel Buddhist meditation very closely, with the outcome being an approach to the ground of the Christian soul. The mind sinks into nothingness, which deepens until the Christian mystic completes his or her journey within to the center of the divine Immanence where he or she comes face to face with his or her God, no different than the Christian prophets who have come before. The mystic doesn’t read about God or imagine him at this refined level, the mystic actually meets him! Why else would monks squirrel themselves away and give up all the good times to be had in the world? St John of the Cross, a quintessential Christian mystic has said that all the pleasures of the world are but crumbs from the God’s table.

After a Buddhist practices meditation religiously, lives a moral life, and acquires wisdom, he or she then goes on to the Brahma, or god planes of existence which span millions of years. Depending on their success with meditation, they will spend from one span to 84,000 spans in these realms. But, alas, eventually they will fall back into human form and be susceptible to all the physical and mental hardships, because only a human form can attain eternal freedom. All the other heaven and god realms are pleasant, but temporary.

The only way to insure never falling back into human form is to acquire supramundane wisdom, and this is done through advanced meditation practices, strict morality and the cultivation of wisdom. The meditator will observe materiality( material things in the universe including our bodies) with bare attention, not intellectual evaluations. He or she will see the arising and passing of all materiality.

The meditator will observe impermanence of all things in the universe, the suffering of beings here on earth, and the reality that no self stands behind it all. What the meditator sees as a self is only a reflection of the Ultimate Reality, but because we spend so much time on this self apparition, we never really get to know this Reality, and therefore can’t be with it permanently.

The trick is to somehow see this self and break the self-hypnosis that we are under. This is called enlightenment; a direct personal experience that is totally intuitive and beyond the common mind. Once the self is seen through, there is no possibility of ever returning to the human or lower realms.

All of this can only be experienced, not something that is believed in. Buddhists only believe what they can prove true for themselves, and meditation is the means of doing that. Once a permanent shift in consciousness occurs, then one can remain in the present and a base of calm underpins everything. Then, no matter what the turbulent outside circumstances are, underlying peace and wisdom prevail without effort. Therefore, Buddhists need not look to future realms or other places for their happiness, happiness is present in every moment .

Image : http://www.flickr.com

For the record, I am a Bible-believer, a Christian-Zionist (one who believes the Prophets foretold the restoration of Jews first of all 12 Tribes of Israel to the Promised Land of Israel before the end of this world as we know it). I am not a Protestant or a “Jew for Jesus” and certainly not a member of the Roman Catholic Cult. I am a baptized member of the Sabbath-keeping Church of God (who believe the plain truth of the Bible that Herbert W. Armstrong taught).

It grieves me when I’m on various Jewish sites, pro-Israel sites, and some vainly try and pigeonhole my calls for Jews to follow Judaism to the Jewish Homeland to become better Jews and falsely accuse me of only “wanting Jews to die so Jesus can return.” Nothing could be further from the truth! (Away with stereotypes! Are all Jews rich or liberal?). I share what Judaism teaches about aliyah (ascent, emigration to Eretz Yisrael – the Land of Israel). Did the Ramban want Jews to return to Zion and die so Jesus could return? Preposterous, eh? Indeed.

I also do not fall for the rapture myth, as some allege, striving to substantiate their theories as to why I have such a great love for Jews and Israel, failing to grasp that I truly believe in the Israelite origins of the West, especially the revelation of Joseph as the Anglo-Saxon peoples, as taught by Brit Am Israel and others, and am convinced the Jews are the ethnic brethren of British-Israelites (contrary to those groups who reject the Jews as illegitimate), and that the Land of Israel is also our ancient and future inheritance. This precious knowledge and love for klal Yisrael (all Israel, collective 12 Tribes) is my God-given motivation and why I yearn to return to Zion and stay attached to it while in exile (due to an unjust deportation I’ve suffered for highlighting the plight of the Temple Mount under illegal Nazi-Muslim occupation).

The Bible clearly teaches, recognized by both Jews and Christians, that the Jews would again be living in the Promised Land of Israel in preparation for the coming of King Messiah. Judaism teaches it “hastens the day of redemption” and Christians say “amen.” We can agree on that point and permit time to tell who fulfills the prophecies completely, as all will be revealed and Israel and Judah will be reunited, reconciled, and Jerusalem saved from Gentile occupation. The Jews also believe that Elijah will herald the coming of the King to fulfill the Prophets and teach Torah, and Christians know the chief spokesman between the Two Witnesses will announce – in the spirit of Elijah (who is dead and buried) – the Kingdom of God.

I want Jews to return to Eretz Yisrael because it is loving obedience to God, as well as Israel’s future construction of the Third Temple, the Temple of God (not just of the Jews as some slander) even though Israel must be warned not to trust Europe’s lying guarantees of peace and security or their imminent Antiochus Epiphanes who will betray Israel and occupy Jerusalem and pollute the Temple of God, if they’re not careful to hear and heed the Prophets.

Despite unwarranted hatred from some hypocritical Jews who treat all Christians shamefully, failing to distinguish between those who are honest friends of Jews and Israel and those who aren’t, I want to express unconditional love to help save Jews from physical and spiritual harm. I want Jews to live and prosper and love and obey God and be blessed rather than to continue to suffer escalating divine punishments for sin that will only intensify (Dan. 9:11). I hope to help avert another holocaust, one that will target the British-Israelites (the “Lost Ten Tribes”) and Jews, ignited by the German-dominated EU under Roman Catholic influence.

May all 12 Tribes of Israel remember our Hebrew roots and biblical responsibilities, turn from our national idolatry and immorality (2 Chron. 7:14), and be restored to world power and prosperity and ascend even greater heights of glory as a truly United Kingdom, One Nation Under God.

For many years now the Mormon church has been producing monthly magazines. Three main magazines have been produced in recent years and are currently in distribution:

“The Friend” – A publication for younger members of the church, this magazine has puzzles, pictures, games, and other activities that younger children enjoy. There is also a section called “Our Creative Friends” which contains artwork created by the youth of the church. The purpose of “The Friend” is to help build testimony and gospel knowledge in children.

“The New Era” – A church magazine for older youth and teens. This includes stories and articles to help teens and youth to come to a greater understanding of gospel principles through inspirational quotes from church leadership. This magazine also includes artwork and mormonads – pictures with catch phrases that teach a moral principle.

“The Ensign” – For adult members of the church, this publication has instruction direct from the leadership of the church. It includes a message from the first presidency, the highest governing body in the church as well as articles from other general authorities and church members. The magazine is filled with LDS art and other Mormon artwork.

Magazines have been an important part of the Mormon church from the early days as a way of spreading news of the church, sharing spiritual experiences and to providing gospel insights. LDS art has been used to help bring visual aids to make the articles more interesting. In every issue of “The Ensign”, they have a spot on the back featuring art from well known LDS artists. “The New Era” has LDS art used to inspire youth to make right choices. In recent years “The Friend” magazine has had cartoon artwork that has a similar style to modern cartoons to capture children’s interests.

LDS magazines give members of the church information and help build spiritual strength.

Trent Bowen is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day saints and is a collector of LDS media. He is the owner of http://www.prophetpaintings.com. He believes that LDS artwork can bless the lives of others.

Howard Jones was a best-selling British pop-star of the mid-1980’s known for his uplifting synth melodies and truly unique haircut. Throughout his career Jones promoted vegetarianism and spirituality, and today is a practising Buddhist.

The musical beginnings of British popular artist, vegetarian, practising Buddhist and master of 1980’s synthesiser-pop Howard Jones were auspicious, although he probably didn’t recognise it at the time. A piano player and teacher from an early age, he was involved in a car accident which left him injured. One of his students–and later wife–Jan Smith, who was in the vehicle at the time, claimed compensation on his behalf, and used the money to buy him a synthesiser–a Moog Prodigy. He was actually sent two by mistake, and liked their combination so much he paid for the second. Thus a synth-pop legend was born.

Howard Jones would appear initially on stage with a mime artist named Jed Hoile, performing improvised choreography whilst doused in white paint. It seems the world wasn’t yet ready for New Wave synth-mime, and Jones made the big time sans improvised mime artist–although Jed was brought back for a special 20th Anniversary retro set in 2003.

The mid-eighties saw a frenzy of albums and top 40 hits in both the UK and the US for this so called “respectable” face of pop, and the single ‘Like To Get To Know You Well,’ an unofficial anthem to the Los Angeles Olympics, was huge around the world. Jones also had one of the best haircuts in the business, described by one authority as a peculiar early 80’s combo of mop-top and dyed spikes.

Despite sudden fame, fortune and eight million albums sold, Jones remained true to his ideals, promoting strong feelings for animal rights and and against human excess. His first album, the platinum selling chart topping “Human’s Lib,” is both a reference in title to the animal liberation movement and the moksha of the Buddhist and Indian religions.

Look in better places gonna look inside

Gonna get higher something is pulling me on

Breaking down the old ways feeling no regret

Gone are the shaky sands Ive been building on

(Hunt The Self)

Jones’ second album, “Dream into Action,” also successful, continued a long-standing advocacy of vegetarianism, with the track ‘Assault & Battery’ pulling no punches:

Children’s stories with their farmyard favourites

On the table in a different disguise

Another song from the album, ‘Hunger For the Flesh,’ was a lyrical treatise on the Buddhist Noble Truths, Jones singing from the heart about karmic attachment and rebirth:

They came here for to dance

To learn and not to cling

Holding onto life

As if it were the important thing

‘Is There A Difference’ continues the album’s strong Eastern theme, lyrics based upon Chapter 20 of the Tao Te Ching (The Way of Life).

A former Christian, Jones was introduced to Buddhism by a friend and never looked back. A devotee of Nichiren Buddhism, a thousand year old Japanese off-shoot noted for it’s focus on the Lotus Sutra and the belief that realisation of the Buddha-nature is in the present life, he chants daily for an hour in the morning and thirty minutes at night.

Twenty years since the peak of his fame, Howard Jones continues his musical quest for enlightenment, releasing “Revolution of the Heart” in 2005 with a strong lyrical message for inner human change, or to quote the musician himself, “in fact a revolution of the heart.”

But I decided to give the Alpha Hydrox line a try.

WELL, this product made a hugely noticable difference in my sensitive, problematic, acne-prone skin the very first time I used it! My acne instantly began clearing up and the acne discolorations that had long been there started fading. But the most pleasant side effect was that my skin looked a lot plumper and more youthful! I cannot imagine a product being any more effective than this one.

I have to say that I’m really impressed. The price cannot be beat. Also, it did not irritate my notoriously sensitive skin. Buy it, you will NOT be disappointed.
Alpha Hydrox: 10% AHA Anti-Wrinkle Treatment.
Recommended for: Dry to Normal Skin Types.
Not for use on delicate/sensitive skin.
Absorbs quickly. Fragrance-free. Effective pH 4.
Proven to significantly reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Safely lifts dead cells from the skin’s surface to revitalize and help restore youthful, healthy, radiant-looking skin.
Renews moisture, refines texture, improves elasticity and skin tone.
Specially formulated with rich moisturizers and Vitamin E.
Contains 10% pure Glycolic-AHA.
The exfoliating effect of Alpha Hydrox Enhanced Lotion is also beneficial for use on the legs, arms and body. Its rich moisturizers and alpha hydroxy provide soft, smooth, silky skin when used on these areas.
This light cream glides on and is absorbed quickly into clean, dry skin. It has, indeed, helped speed healing and lessened the appearance of scar tissue on my keloid-prone skin. Very little of this admittedly expensive skin treatment is needed, and best results are obtained if the cream is applied right after bathing, and reapplied lightly after each bath for several days. Worth the price and one jar lasts a long time when used as instructed. Dermal-K: Skip the painful shots or expensive lasers and apply soothing cream instead! Previously available only through dermatologists, Dermal-K Cream helps improve the appearance of unsightly spider veins and bruises. Click here for list of ingredients.
